What's happening at AnimeFest!

Over Labor Day weekend there will be a variety of panel discussions, workshops and other activities which give you a chance to get to know our special guests and maybe learn a little bit of thier skills.

There will be two separate panel discussion tracks and a workshop track running continuously each day during the convention. Panel and workshop descriptions are below. Closer to the con we hope to post the schedule.

  • National Trailer Premier of The Brunch Club by X-treme Players Productions based on The Breakfast Club using the characters from the hit Anime, Naruto!
  • Otaku Hell:
    We're happy to bring our OtakuHELL show to AnimeFEST for the 5th time in 5 years. Dan Baker and Bruce Lewis will be entertaining you with your favorite OtakuHELL clips and a few new ones. As a special bonus we'll be celebrating a segment we premired at last year's AnimeFEST: NEWPORT NINJA SQUAD! Come by and share the fun!
  • Miyazaki and the future of Studio Ghibli with Marc Hairston, Debbie Scally and Angela Matthews: will hold a discussion on Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.
  • Make Your Own Anime: (1 hr) Independent animators currently producing the film "The Nine" teach you how you can make big movies - without big budgets!
  • Voice actor panels : question and answer discussion with our Voice Actor guests. Check your schedule for the guests in each panel.
  • Religion, Spirituality, and Anime: with Marc Hairston, Angela Mathews, Debbie Scally, & Carrie Savage - What does anime have to say about the big questions of life, the universe, and everything? This panel will look at the way several anime series (Haibane-Renmei, Wolf's Rain, Witch Hunter Robin, Kino's Journey, Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.) view different religions and various spiritual beliefs.
  • Instant Character: Take an artist, add a voice actor and bring in an audience suggestion, what do you get? Instant Character. Audience members suggest a character, the artist sketches it out and the voice actor brings it to life.
  • Webcomic panels -- Randy Milholland, Xero Reynolds, Chris Moujeas, Amelie Belcher, Krista Fisk, Michelle Thatcher, Cory Geloneck, Andrea Cortright Trotter: Discussion on webcomics by artists and web designers.
  • Advanced Writing / Art Workshop: (2-3 hrs) Ever wished pros would take time and really look at your stuff? Now's your chance! This is a hands-on workshop - bring your story ideas and flesh them out with Daniel Sanchez, author of "The Nine", or attend Dan Fu's amazing artist round table - you'll leave with some great art and a valuable experience!
  • Writing a Paper on Anime/Manga For Your High School or College Class: This is a chance to bring your anime to school. Debbie Scally teaches an anime course at Richland College and Angela Matthews taught intro composition using anime at UNT while she was a grad student and now teaches that at Collin County Community College.
  • Ikebana demonstration with Amira Matsuda : Discussion and demonstration on Ikebana -- the art of Japanese Flower arranging.
  • Anime in your Libarary with Shannon Terrill: Why can't I find Anime and Manga in my library? Discussion on why Libraries and schools are hesitant to carry anime and manga titles and ways fans can encourage their branch to order more items.
  • Artist panels: question and answer discussion with our Artist guests. We will mix it up so check your schedules for who will be in each session.
  • Making Manga - Session I: Based upon the forthcoming book published by Barnes & Noble! American manga-maker Bruce Lewis (ROBOTECH, GALL FORCE, STAR BLAZERS,LOVE COOKIE) goes in-depth and in detail on how to get a piece of the current manga boom in the U.S. With manga now the most popular form of comics sold in the North American market, the time is ripe for young creators to get in on the action, and Bruce is here to show you how. Bring your questions - how to "break in", what kind of pens work best, esoteric queries - Bruce will have the answers, or will show you where to find them.
  • Making Manga - Session II: Get the tools you need to make your own manga here! American manga-maker Bruce Lewis (ROBOTECH, GALL FORCE, STAR BLAZERS,LOVE COOKIE) covers the Seven Steps to making your own American Manga, and discusses in detail the sale of his latest comics project, LOVE COOKIE (forthcoming from TokyoPop in 2005). As before, any question you may have on tools, tehniques, or the Manga industry is welcome. Based upon the forthcoming book published by Barnes & Noble!
  • Costuming Round Table: This costuming forum gives attendees the chance to compare craftsmanship methods of different costumers and gain some new and creative ways to make costumes, props, and style wigs. Paper Wings will provide an example of a prop or costume, and the forum members will discuss how they, personally, would go about making the costume in question. Everyone costumes a different way, and this should be a great opportunity for costumers to learn about alternative crafting methods!
  • Iron Cosplay: Test your creativity by creating a costume out of unknown bits in a short amount of time.
  • Escaflowne - with Zohra Hakimi and Gretchen Hintz: Discussion based on the series with trivia games and prizes.
  • Japanese Language: View differences between 3 different Japanese languages. Plus, Japanse writing styles and learn some basics about the Japanese language.
  • Anime 101: Learn to navigate your way through an anime convention.
  • Shinto Discussion - John Hidalgo, Texas Shinto Study Group members: Discussion about Shinto, shrine etiquette and demonstration of a Shinto prayer.

    Full Memberships:

    Valid from date of purchase through Dec 31st 2008

    • $15 - Child (8-12) Membership.
    • $25 - If paid online or postmarked by December 31st
    • $30 - If paid online or postmarked by July 31st
    • $35 - If postmarked by Fri Aug 15th or paid online by credit card by Fri Aug 22nd
    • $40 - Purchased after Fri Aug 22nd online or at the convention.

    Single Day Memberships:

    Valid for one day only, only available at the convention.

    Admission is only available to AnimeFest members. Memberships are available at the door, but are priced higher than if purchased prior to the convention. Memberships purchased now are valid though December 31st, 2008 and include admission to AnimeFest 2008. Additionally the member may also be entitled to attend other AnimeFest sponsored events for free or at a nominal charge (although these other events are rare).

    Due to information privacy laws, children 12 and under may not register online or by mail. However:
    • Children 7 years old and younger may not actually join the club, however they are admitted free to club functions when accompanied by an adult member.
    • Children ages 8-12 may join the club, but may only register at club events. Children's memberships are available for only $15. In addition, a parent or verifiable legal guardian must be present to give consent to join the club.
    • All children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult at all club functions. Therefore, the adult guardian must also be a member in order to accompany the minor to most convention functions. [more info...]
